Moonlight’s Little, Chiron, Black and Juan are all represented in Calvin Klein’s newest campaign, debuting at the timeliest of all times: the day after the film won best picture at the 2017 Academy Awards during a historic mixup. And if you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know that despite 4 separate actors being casted in the campaign (Mahershala Ali, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes and Alex Hibbert), only 2 Moonlight characters are being represented: the 3 stages of Chiron’s development and the father figure during Chiron’s adolescence.
Needless to say, Calvin Klein ads are iconic. That mere fact alone paired with casting black actors from a well-made LGBTQ film says enough about how important and empowering this is for society, especially at a racially and politically charged time as now. On top of it all, being released a day after Moonlight took Best Picture at the Oscars (especially with that mishap) further amplifies the important story this film carried. But symbolically, I find this smart advertising campaign empowering for all men and fully supportive of the modern man regardless of age seeing no divide based on race, where he comes from, and whom he loves. It’s all love: self-love and love for one another. Bravo, Calvin Klein. This is how advertising — in all senses — should be done.
